Gutter Maintenance in Fall: Why It Matters More Than You Think in Michigan

Gutters don’t get a lot of respect. They’re not as visible as a new roof, they don’t add curb appeal, and cleaning them is nobody’s idea of a fun Saturday. But in Michigan, where fall means heavy leaf drop and winter means serious ice loads, gutters are genuinely one of the most important parts of your home’s drainage and protection system.

Here’s what can go wrong when gutters are neglected in the fall, and what to do about it.

Gutters don't get a lot of respect. They're not as visible as a new roof, they don't add curb appeal, and cleaning them is nobody's idea of a fun Saturday. But in Michigan, where fall means heavy leaf drop and winter means serious ice loads, gutters are genuinely one of the most important parts of your home's drainage and protection system.

Clogged Gutters and Ice Dams

We talked about ice dams in another post, but it’s worth repeating here: clogged gutters are a primary contributor. When gutters are full of wet leaves and debris, they can’t drain. Water sits in the gutter, freezes, and the ice progressively works its way back under the shingles.

You can have perfect attic insulation and ventilation and still develop ice dams if your gutters are blocked solid. Cleaning them out before the first hard freeze is one of the most cost-effective preventive things you can do for your roof.

What Clogged Gutters Do to Your Foundation

When gutters overflow, either because they’re full or because they’re detached from the fascia, that water dumps directly against your foundation instead of being directed away from the house. Over time, this leads to moisture in the basement, efflorescence on foundation walls, and in severe cases, actual structural damage.

In Lansing, where we have a lot of clay-heavy soil that expands when wet and contracts when dry, foundation issues can develop faster than you might expect. A properly functioning gutter system that moves water away from the structure is part of protecting that investment.

Signs Your Gutters Need Attention

During or after a heavy rain, watch what your gutters are doing. Water spilling over the front edge of the gutter means it’s clogged or has a low spot. Water coming out from behind the gutter means it’s pulling away from the fascia. Gutters that are visibly sagging in the middle need to be re-secured or replaced.

Also, check the seams on sectional gutters, these tend to separate over time and can leak without being obvious until you see the staining on the side of your house.

Seamless Gutters vs. Sectional: What’s the Difference?

If your gutters are reaching the end of their useful life, it’s worth considering upgrading to seamless gutters. Sectional gutters — the kind with visible seams every few feet — have joints that are prone to leaking over time. Seamless gutters are fabricated as a single continuous piece cut to the exact length of your roofline, so there are no joints to fail except at the corners and downspouts.

They’re not dramatically more expensive than sectional, and they last longer with less maintenance. Capital Roofing installs seamless gutter systems as part of our roofing and exterior services.

Gutter Guards: Worth It or Not?

For homeowners with a lot of trees overhead, which is a lot of Lansing neighborhoods, gutter guards can significantly reduce how often you need to clean. They won’t eliminate maintenance entirely, but they can stretch cleaning intervals from twice a year to once every few years.

The quality varies a lot by product. We’re happy to walk you through options that make sense for your property and tree situation.
